The report also emphasis the manifold role of African women farmers as seed custodians\, plant breeders and herbalists; and as experts on both domesticated and wild biodiversity. \nHowever\, these informal seed systems are now at risk. It exposes how trade agreements\, international legal frameworks related to Intellectual Property Rights (UPOV 1991) and business seek to privatise\, monopolise and control seeds by patenting and commodifying this very source of life at the expense of peoples’ human rights and the maintenance of biodiversity. And it shows that farmers’ and peasant seeds systems\, which feed the world and are resilient in times of natural disasters\, are at risk\, and calls upon states to adopt stronger policies and laws that recognise and protect farmers’ rights to save\, use\, exchange and sell seeds. \nThe EP Resolution of 7 June 2016 on the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (2015/2277 (INI)): “Urges the Commission to ensure that the commitments made to farmers’ rights by the EU under ITPGRFA are reflected in all technical assistance and financial support for seed policy development; calls for the EU to support IRP regimes that enhance the development of locally adapted seed varieties and farmers-saved seeds;” (point 71). \nResources\nRight to Food and Nutrition Watch 2016: Keeping Seeds in Peoples’ Hands \nEP Resolution of 7 June 2016 on the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition (2015/2277 (INI)) \nThe Future of Food: Seeds of Resilience: A compendium of perspectives on agricultural biodiversity from around the world\, published by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food. \nThe UPOV Convention\, Farmers’ Rights and Human Rights. Read the call to see how to get involved in the preparations and how to participate in the conference.\n \nThe Nyéléni Forum brings together farmers\, fishers\, pastoralists\, indigenous peoples\, consumers\, NGOs\, trade unions\, environmental\, development\, research and justice/solidarity/human rights organisations\, community-based food movements and others\, to enhance existing food sovereignty initiatives and strengthen our work at local\, national\, regional and global levels. \nThis is a mobilisation call for participation for the 2nd Nyéléni Europe Forum for Food Sovereignty. It will be organised around 5 thematic axes (changing how food is produced and consumed\, changing how food is distributed\, valuing work and improving social conditions in food & agricultural systems\, reclaiming the right to natural resources and the Commons\, changing public policies governing our food and agricultural systems) and oriented towards 4 goals (experience sharing\, build on our common understanding of Food Sovereignty in Europe\, develop a Strategy and Action Plan to strengthen and enlarge the Food Sovereignty movement in Europe\, influence and advocate for policies that support Food Sovereignty in Europe). \nLet’s get involved! Some 700 – 1\,000 participants who work on food sovereignty\, from the entire pan-European area of 42 countries\, will come together in Cluj-Napoca from 26th – 30th of October 2016. In order to ensure balance among delegates\, representative of all those who are involved in food and agriculture across Europe\, participation in the Forum will be organised on the basis of a quota system for the various constituencies. This will include gender balance. There will be a limit to the size of national delegations. \nThe preparatory process leading up to the Nyéléni Europe Forum and the involvement of all those who are active in the Food Sovereignty Movement in Europe are key to ensuring the success of the Forum. There are different ways for you to become part of the process/movement: \n\nGet involved in a general way: if you are interested in the preparatory process or just want to know more\, you can sign up for the newsletter and further information\nHelp build the national delegations: if you are already involved in the Food Sovereignty movement\, then get engaged in the national preparatory process\, or through your constituency. Focal points will be defined in each country. If you are interested in being a focal point\, please contact info[at]nyelenieurope.net\nHold preparatory meetings and discussions: organise discussions\, forums\, meetings\, locally or nationally. These will feed into the content of the Forum itself\, and also help to build stronger working links for the future.\nOrganise fundraising at national level: to contribute – according to capacity – to the cost of participation and if possible to the general budget of the Forum.\nParticipate in the Working Groups to help organise the Forum: there is an existing coordination committee and five working groups (task team\, communications\, methodology\, finance and logistics). The coordination committee reflects a balance between the different constituencies. The working groups are open to anyone. Increasingly\, seed and agrochemical business seeks to privatise\, monopolise and control seeds by patenting and commodifying this very source of life. Meanwhile\, peasant and indigenous communities who have been the developers and guardians of seeds for millennia\, are finding their rights to save\, use\, exchange and sell seeds overshadowed by a corporate agenda that prioritises profit over human rights and the sustainable maintenance of nature. \nAs in previous editions\, the renowned Right to Food and Nutrition Watch publication will be launched on October 13 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome\, analysing some of these key issues. It will expose how the corporate capture of seeds and other natural resources – land\, water\, forests – is impacting the way in which the food we eat is produced. \nSeeds and agricultural biodiversity have been at the heart of social movements’ struggles for decades. Nonetheless\, and despite manifold interlinkages\, efforts towards the realisation of the human right to adequate food and nutrition have thus far paid insufficient attention to them. “Keeping Seeds in Peoples’ Hands” explores ways to close this gap and promote a stronger agenda to advance these interconnected struggles. \nCommenting on this year’s edition\, Olivier De Schutter\, former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food (2008-2014) and member of the UN Committee on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights\, says: “In all world regions\, communities are circumventing the mainstream food system and the striking inequalities and concentration of power that characterise it. The battle around seeds and agrobiodiversity illustrates this\, better perhaps than any other part of the food system. Sociodiversity appears as a key tool for the preservation and enhancement of agrobiodiversity\, and food sovereignty as a condition for the full realisation of the right to food. The Watch 2016 is therefore an invitation to take action: to find alternatives and to challenge the mainstream narrative as to what progress is about and how to measure it”. \nThe central role of women as custodians of seed and biodiversity will also be under discussion. They are the unacknowledged and unseen experts on these matters and must be involved in any decision-making. But it makes little sense for women to become equal partners within a broken system. As echoed by the Watch\, what needs to be changed is the current value system that favours food and seed for profit over seed and food – rights\, not commodities – for those who produce it and their heirs. \nPhoto by Irdan Nofriza Nasution. DESCRIPTION:Invitation to Breakfast event: \nTTIP: TRADING AWAY OUR FOOD AND FARMERS? \nWednesday June 15th\, 8h30-9h30 \nLocation: Press Club – Rue Froissart 95\, 1000 Brussels \nSince the early days of the WTO\, farming has been one of the hottest potatoes in trade talks. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could have major impacts on farming and food production in the European Union\, increasing risks of harmful effects to public health. \nCorporate lobby groups on both sides of the Atlantic are pushing for more market access. This could have challenging effects on our food and farmers\, as European and American food is produced to different standards of food safety\, animal welfare and environmental protection. Civil society groups and farming organisations have expressed concern that the TTIP will lead to the further intensification and corporate concentration of agriculture on both sides of the Atlantic\, threatening family farms’ survival and citizen’s health. \nFollow the discussion on twitter by using the #TTIPFarming hashtag! \nParticipants will be welcomed by coffee at 8h15 \nSPEAKERS: \nJohn Clarke\, DG AGRI\, head of international bilateral relations \nMute Schimpf\, Friends of the Earth Europe\, food campaigner \nHanny Van Geel\, European Coordination Via Campesina\, Coordinating Committee \nFACILITATION: Debbie Barker\, Center for Food Safety\, USA \nRegistration and contact: marion[at]eurovia.org URL:https://handsontheland.net/event/ttip-trading-away-our-food-and-farmers/ LOCATION:Press Club\, Rue Froissart 95\, Brussels\, 1000\, Belgium CATEGORIES:public debate END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160417 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160418 DTSTAMP:20221209T124338 CREATED:20160223T125729Z LAST-MODIFIED:20160223T125729Z UID:612-1460851200-1460937599@handsontheland.net SUMMARY:International Day of Peasants' Struggles DESCRIPTION: URL:https://handsontheland.net/event/international-day-of-peasants-struggles/ END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160322 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160323 DTSTAMP:20221209T124338 CREATED:20160223T125528Z LAST-MODIFIED:20160223T125528Z UID:611-1458604800-1458691199@handsontheland.net SUMMARY:World Water Day DESCRIPTION: URL:https://handsontheland.net/event/world-water-day/ END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160305 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160307 DTSTAMP:20221209T124338 CREATED:20160229T142846Z LAST-MODIFIED:20160229T144256Z UID:617-1457136000-1457308799@handsontheland.net SUMMARY:Conference: The Right to Food\, the Right to Natural Resources – Food Sovereignty from a Nordic Perspective DESCRIPTION:Local and national control\, ownership and possibilities to create higher value for local communities of land\, water and other natural resources is a reality in Sweden and in other parts of the world. These necessary common assets that belong to all of us\, are increasingly being looked upon as a commodity. We believe that it is absolutely necessary to strengthen and expand laws and regulations on both national and international level that recognises\, respects\, protects\, and fulfils the right to land and natural resources for peasants\, farmers and foresters\, small scale cost fishermen\, reindeer keeper\, pastoralists and indigenous people.\nFIAN and NOrdBruk along with the Hands On the Land campaign hereby invite you to an education and exchange of experience on the theme – our common natural resources. \n“With this conference we want to stimulate the political debate that has been missing during all these years since 1990. The shift in the system that is currently taking place is entirely a political project\,” says Torgny Östling from NOrdBruk\, a member organisation of La Vía Campesina. \nOnly a small part of the peasants remains after the shift in systems that took place in the beginning of the 1990s. Large scale industrial agriculture and fishing has taken over most of the food production. At the same time the degree of self-sufficiency has gone down with 50-75 percent in 25 years. In the forest\, the industry decides prices\, quality and harvesting methods. Individual peasants\, farmers\, reindeer keepers and (coastal) fishermen have needed to adjust to large scale methods\, or downsizing and cease their production. We blame the prices on agricultural raw materials\, import from the EU and the rest of the world\, high prices on properties\, and a consumers’ power that does not work. \nSo far the consumers’ power has controlled the switch to large scale production and prices\, while politics has been limited to the aid and control system that the industries are now depending on as a consequence of opening up our borders by joining EU’s legislation and the World Trade Organization. Green industries are affected both here\, in the Nordic countries and everywhere on the planet – by globalisation. \nParticipation is free. The organisers of the event provide housing and food. \nFor more information about the conference and registration\, contact Rebecka Jalvemyr at +46(0)70-634 93 47 or rebecka.jalvemyr[at]fian.se \nWelcome! \nParts of the program: \nThe Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land\, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security were officially endorsed by the Committee on World Food Security on 11 May 2012. The purpose of the guidelines is to give guidance to states on how they can fulfil the right to food by improving the governance of the managing of natural recourses to benefit the local community\, where the access to the recourses are. FIAN and NOrdbruk will provide basic and more complex insights in the guidelines; what effect they have and what they mean on a national and global level. With the guidelines as a basis we can by exchanging experiences and discussions\, together find the best way for implementing them in our Swedish environment to regain the control over our common assets. \nInga Carlman\, Professor in environmental science\, on ‘Ecological technique and sustainable building’ at Mittuniversitetet in Östersund\, will contribute with her special knowledge of ownership and the right to land\, especially farmland and agriculture. She has written the book “The Future in the hands of the ancestors” – about ownership and other right to the land from the provincial laws to modern time from an environmental rights perspective. \nTorbjörn Skytt\, researcher at ‘Ecological technique and sustainable building’ at Mittuniversitetet will talk about the problem with the dominating perspective that agriculture have to “grow or die” to be able to continue to provide for the farmer. Is there alternatives to these two roads\, since they are not sustainable in the long run? The discussion is based on examples from the situation in the village where he lives and where agriculture has been active for many hundreds of years. \nAira Sevón\, farmer\, La Vía Campesina Finland. Discusses the differences between Sweden and Finland even though both countries are members of the EU. Åland is also an important example that she will discuss since it has its own regulations and sovereignty over farmers and agriculture. \n———\nThis event is part of the Hands on the Land Campaign\, an education and awareness raising campaign carried out with the financial support of the European Union. FIAN Netherlands and TNI support this important conference financially and participates in the programme as part of the campaign ‘Hands on the Land for Food Sovereignty’.\n\nSee the programme organised by FIAN Netherlands and TNI here. \nThe conference will be accessible to non-Dutch speakers\, as keynotes will be (translated) in English and in every round some workshops will be in English. Register yourself at the Voedsel Anders website. \nMany people in the Netherlands and Belgium are working towards changing our food and agricultural system. Change is necessary\, because the current system is depleting the soil and causes a large amount of total greenhouse gas emissions. Farmers are faced with the competitiveness of the global market\, while land is often used for production of fodder and fuel\, instead of local food. \nLocal\, national and international initiatives show that a different system is within reach. We can feed the world sustainably with good and healthy food\, fair prices for farmers\, fishermen and citizens\, while respecting the environment and biodiversity. In addition\, healthy soils can help solve the problem of climate change. \nThe first Voedsel Anders conference at the University of Wageningen in 2014 was a great success with over 800 participants. This second edition\, farmers\, fishermen\, citizens\, scientists and grassroots organisations come together to build a contemporary\, sustainable and fair food production and consumption system\, with new relationships between farmers and consumers. This way\, we provide creative and dynamic alternatives for the large scale and industrialized food production dictated by multinational corporations. \nWould you like to learn\, experience and discuss new and attainable forms of food and agriculture? Would you like to help build bridges and contribute to a more sustainable and fair system? Would you like to meet sustainable (young) farmers and fishermen\, and be inspired by innovative examples from the Netherlands and abroad? Then be sure to visit this conference! \nFor all farmers\, scientists\, beekeepers\, students\, artists\, professionals\, policymakers and journalists in food and agro\, and any concerned and or active citizens. \nVoedsel Anders (Food Otherwise) is a network of farmers\, fisherfolk\, scientists\, beekeepers\, students\, artists\, professionals\, policymakers\, journalists and other active citizens in the Netherlands and Belgium engaged in building healthy food systems. While the current agrifood system is depleting the soil and biodiversity\, causes major greenhouse gas emissions and squeezes farmers out of business\, many local\, national and international initiatives show that there is another way. We can feed ourselves sustainably with good and healthy food that is produced regionally\, with fair prices and dignified lives for farmers\, fishermen and citizens\, while respecting the environment and biodiversity. This is the system we promote.\n——- \nThe contribution of FIAN Netherlands and TNI to this conference is part of the Hands on the Land campaign\, which is financially supported by the European Commission. They are also directly affected by the impacts of climate destruction. The climate change mitigation schemes of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which are presented as “solutions” to the man-made climate crisis are false solutions given that they are intrinsically linked to these resource grabs and human rights violations. \nAt this public event\, you will get the unique opportunity to listen to and engage in conversations with representatives of frontline communities from all regions of the world. These leaders of the struggle for climate justice participate in panel sessions and will discuss the false solutions to the climate crisis of the UNFCCC\, the real solutions which are rooted in peoples’ knowledge and experiences\, and how the Global Convergence on Land and Water Struggles can advance the struggle for systemic change. \nWhy this meeting?\nDouble impact: One of the most immediate effects of the false solutions to the current man-made climate crisis is people’s loss of access to land and water – the very natural resources upon which people depend for their livelihoods and food sovereignty. Privatisation and financialisation of nature is the intended result of UNFCCC schemes such as REDD+ and it is well known to dispossess masses of people. Already pushed to the fringe\, deprived of access to land and water in rural and urban settings\, frontline communities also face the increasingly frequent natural disasters that are caused by the climate change – and the inability of governments to agree to real solutions. \nSystemic changes: the real solutions articulated by frontline communities derive from local livelihood strategies and practices. A commonality of the diverse – and locally adapted – real solutions\, is that these build on the needs and interests of the people and require a fundamental shift away from solutions that are developed by and for a minority elite. In this way\, real solutions are intrinsically linked to the necessity of systemic changes.\nThe Global Convergence on Land and Water Struggles unpacks and further develops the real solutions through frontline dialogue. The public event will advance this dialogue by giving the platform to frontline communities and ensuring space for interaction with the audience. In short\, the convergence will show the way forward. \nThe event is divided into three panel sessions: false solutions\, real solutions\, and showing the way forward. \nAbout the Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles \n“We\, social movements\, grassroots organizations and civil society organizations engaged in the defense of the rights to land and water are fighting back\, asserting our rights and providing real solutions. We believe that peoples’ access to and control of land and water is essential to peace\, to stopping climate change\, as well as to fulfilling fundamental human rights and guaranteeing a dignified life for all.”\nDakar to Tunis: Declaration of the Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles. \nThe Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles is an initiative initiated and led by grassroots organizations and social movements in order to link and strengthen the struggles for food and peoples’ sovereignty and human rights. This process started in October 2014\, as several social and grassroots movements from Africa as well as civil society organizations gathered at the African Social Forum in Dakar to protest against all forms of natural resource grabbing and the systematic human rights violations that accompany them. Sharing their ideas\, they recognized the essential solidarity between their struggles and decided to meet again at the World Social Forum to continue this dialogue with movements and organizations from all over the world. \nThe declaration “Rights to Water and Land\, a Common Struggle. Dakar to Tunis Declaration of the Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles” sets out the vision\, principles and aspirations of the Convergence and is intended to serve the process of building a strong and united movement struggling for the enforcement of public policies based on food and peoples’ sovereignty in order to realize the human rights to food and nutrition\, water\, land and territories\, seeds\, and others. The Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles is a response by local communities and grassroots organizations around the world who assert their rights\, provide real solutions and resist and struggle against the threats to their lives and well-being\, particularly through the appropriation of natural resources by companies\, governments\, elites\, and speculators. \nConvergenceCOP21flyer_EN. \nThis event is part of the Hands on the Land campaign\, financially supported by the European Commission. Metro Station Rue des Boulets (line 9) \nWe are still determined to maintain the voices of civil society in Paris. We will be stepping up in solidarity\, making it clear that Paris is still a lively\, friendly city. We will not give in to terrorists who want to sow fear\, or to the French (and other) governments who want to exclude the voices of those building a peaceful and harmonious society from the ground up. \nSince the Nyéléni Europe Forum in Austria in 2011\, the movement has been continuously strengthened by farmers\, consumers\, fishers\, land workers and groups of activists from the different constituencies that are contributing to the rapid development of the Food Sovereignty Movement throughout Europe. Preparations for the second Nyéléni Europe Forum are underway\, and the Forum will take place in Autumn 2016 in Cluj\, Romania! We still need to do a lot of work to enlarge our movement throughout Europe and strengthen our vision. \nThis is particularly important in light of the threats posed to us all by TTIP\, increasing land concentration and land grabbing in Europe\, new seed regulations\, and continued drive towards export-orientated markets and the growth of industrial agriculture that have sparked a wave of farmers’ protests all over Europe. At the same time\, key political processes such as the next CAP reform and proposals for a European Soil Directive are important opportunities for us to act collectively. We want the Forum in 2016 to be as productive\, positive and inclusive as possible. In order to start the preparation process\, we will meet in Paris\, where many of us will be involved in parallel meetings to COP21. \nThe aim of the Nyéléni Europe II is to build on the outcomes and developments that have taken place since the first Nyéléni forum. \nWho should join us in the Paris meeting? Everybody who is committed to becoming involved in the preparation of the Forum and who shares the vision of Food Sovereignty. The Paris meeting will be a working meeting. \nWe will…\n… remember the milestones since Nyéléni Europe I.\n… kick off the preparation process for Nyéléni Europe II. Initial planning has already been done by our friends in Romania and most of you have filled out the consultation survey.\n… gather some general thoughts and inputs on objectives\, agenda items and activities for the forum. These will be a starting point to be worked upon and complemented with further inputs throughout the year.\n… set up working groups (methodology\, communication\, logistics\, finance/fundraising and any other group deemed necessary)\n… found a coordination group and agree on the next steps. \n[IMPORTANT] Registration: Please register your participation by writing to info(at)nyelenieurope.net by December 1st 2015.\nWe need to know: Name\, Organisation and Constituency (Are you representing food producers (farmers\, fishers\, pastoralists\, urban gardeners\, community supported agriculture)? workers (agricultural workers\, migrants\, trade unions)? an NGO (environmental\, health and development)? a youth organization? a women’s organization? consumers (food co-ops\, urban poor)? or any other group?) \nWe are counting on all the organisations to arrange their own travel and accommodation. Who is to blame for food waste in global food production and distribution chains? What policies are needed to guarantee food sovereignty and to ensure that those who produce food are fairly paid\, and that food is accessible to consumers? \nWorldwide\, 85% of farms occupy less than 2 hectares and produce 70% of food consumed (source: F.A.O.\, IYFF): in fact\, today it is small producers that are feeding the world’s population\, as well as being responsible for most investment in agriculture\, such as the work their families do and the knowledge they apply. However\, on a global scale they also represent the poorest section of the world’s population\, those most vulnerable to food insecurity: a paradox that Expo preferred not to address. \nTerra Nuova\, Rome 3 University and the Citizen Committee for Decentralised Cooperation in Rome present the conference ‘What Expo Didn’t Tell You. Markets\, Democracy and Rights\, for healthy\, sustainable food for all’\, taking place on the 20th October at Rome 3 University. The contributions of various national and international speakers\, from academia\, civil society and institutions\, will address the issue from a variety of perspectives. \nThe day will be divided into the following panel discussions: \n1) What type of governance do sustainable food systems need?\n2) EXPO\, a missed opportunity: local markets and peasant agriculture\n3) Alternative agricultural systems for food sovereignty: some experiences in Italy and abroad The event is open to the public. The conference will be an opportunity to discuss the public policies needed in order to support and implement agroecology in Europe with representatives from EU institutions and the scientific community in Europe. The public debate will be held in the European Parliament building and hosted by MEP Lidia Senra Rodríguez (GUE/NGL). Representatives of farmers and small-scale food producers’ organisations will challenge EU institutions and the scientific community through an interactive debate. \nThe event will be held in English and Spanish. \nOverall objectives of the debate: \n\nTo increase the knowledge and understanding on Agroecology within the EU\nTo present the declaration of the International Forum for Agroecology to the EU institutions and the scientific community in the EU\nTo discuss the public policies needed in order to support and implement agroecology in Europe\nTo strengthen the dialogue between farmers and small-scale food producers’ organisations\, EU institutions and academics in the EU in order to identify key challenges and opportunities within the framework of agroecology.\n\nThe European Coordination Via Campesina brings together 28 small-scale farmers and agricultural workers’ organizations from different European countries. The principal objective of ECVC is the struggle for food and agricultural policies based on the principles of legitimacy\, fairness\, solidarity and sustainability\, which are necessary in Europe to ensure food security\, food safety\, public health\, employment in rural areas and to tackle the issues of the global food crisis and climate change. \n9:30 – 9:45 Welcoming remarks by Andrea Ferrante\, representatives of ECVC (presentation of the declaration of the International Forum for Agroecology)\n9:45 – 10:30 SESSION 1 – Agroecology a concrete reality \nModerated by Maryam Rahmanian\, member of the Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts on food security and nutrition (HLPE) \n\nJyoti Fernandes\, Representatives of ECVC\, Agroecology in Europe as a reality: concrete experiences on acroecology within the EU\nExpert on the Agroecology policy in Brazil (tbc)\nMichel Pimbert\, Executive Director of the Centre for Agroecology\, Water and Resilience (Coventry University)\, Agroecology and research\n\n10:30 – 11:15 Coffee break\n11:15 – 13:15 SESSION II – Roundtable: Agroecology in the EU \nModerated by Andrea Ferrante\, representative of ECVC. \n\nLidia Senra Rodrìguez\, MEP of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left group (GUE/NGL) in the EP\, Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development\nPaolo De Castro (tbc)\, MEP of the Socialist and Democrats group (S&D) in the EP\, Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development\nRepresentative of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the EP (tbc)\nMaria Heubuch (tbc) Greens/EFA-MEP\, Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development\nIman BOOT\, Deputy Head of Unit Research and Innovation\, European Commission\, Directorate General for Agriculture & Rural Development\nClaudia Olazabal\, Head of Unit B1 – Agriculture\, Forests & Soil\, European Commission\, Directorate General for Enviroment\nUnai Aranguren\, Representatives of ECVC\n\nOpen debate \n13:00 Conclusions\n13:15 End of the public debate \nAs agriculture in Europe is already facing several challenges expected to become more severe in the forthcoming decades\, farmers are being asked to change models of production to feed a growing population\, to lessen the farming ecological footprint\, to mitigate climate change while adapting to its vagaries. \nAgroecology is a social and productive framework/movement that accumulated knowledge and wisdom of rural peoples\, organized in a dialog among different kinds of knowledge (diálogo de saberes). The production practices of Agroecology (such as intercropping\, traditional fishing and mobile pastoralism\, integrating crops\, trees\, livestock and fish\, manuring\, compost\, local seeds and animal breeds\, etc.) are based on ecological principles like building life in the soil\, recycling nutrients\, the dynamic management of biodiversity and energy conservation at all scales. Agroecology drastically reduces our use of externally-purchased inputs that must be bought from industry. \nFor this reason\, Agroecology represents an unique opportunity for the agricultural and research agenda of the EU. Food producers organizations from all over the world have recently met in the international forum for Agroecology (Mali\, February 2015) to develop a common understanding of Agroecology. The outcome is Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition. Additionally FAO is currently holding\, in different continents\, regional conferences on Agroecology (Latin America\, Africa and Asia). \nThe conference will be an opportunity to discuss the public policies needed in order to support and implement agroecology in Europe with representatives from EU institutions and the scientific community in Europe. \n——————\nInitiative with financial support from the European Union and Agroecology Fund. (It) DESCRIPTION:VALSAMOGGIA\, 8 GIUGNO 2015. \nPer informazioni: bartolomei[at]terranuova.org URL:https://handsontheland.net/event/siamo-uomini-o-caporali-it/ LOCATION:Rocca dei Bentivoglio\, Sala dei Giganti\, Bazzano (Valsamoggia\, BO)\, Italy CATEGORIES:public debate ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://handsontheland.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/siamo.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/Amsterdam:20150604T123000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/Amsterdam:20150604T133000 DTSTAMP:20221209T124339 CREATED:20150602T123119Z LAST-MODIFIED:20150603T032132Z UID:171-1433421000-1433424600@handsontheland.net SUMMARY:Hands on the Land campaign launch DESCRIPTION: URL:https://handsontheland.net/event/hands-on-the-land-campaign-launch/ LOCATION:Fabbrica del Vapore\, Milan\, Italy END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20150603 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20150606 DTSTAMP:20221209T124339 CREATED:20150515T082810Z LAST-MODIFIED:20150603T032132Z UID:30-1433289600-1433548799@handsontheland.net SUMMARY:Expo dei Popoli DESCRIPTION:The People’s Expo is an international forum of civil society and peasants’ movements in Milan\, Italy.
